Team Bike Werx was seen in action May 21-22 in sunny Fort Lauderdale for one of the most anticipated road races in the 2011 South Florida season.

The weekend of racing started with a circuit race at Markham Park featuring laps on a 1.5-mile oval course. Despite an early crash involving seven racers, the peloton stayed intact for a large field sprint with Bike Werx’s Alex Fix and Michael Cedeno coming ┬áin third and fourth, respectively.

Sunday’s criterium race consisted of an extremely technical layout, challenging riders with an 8-turn, urban course through downtown Ft. Lauderdale. The race started off fast with Team Bike Werx hammering it from the gun, instantly stringing out the peloton. On the second lap there was a crash going into the 5th corner that took out Steve Rolles and James Knippel with only Alex Fix, Michael Cedeno, and Giovanni Jimenez making the split with the lead group of 11. Despite a few attacks and crashes, the peloton took control before the last laps. The field was shattered again late in the race with several high-speed attacks, leading to a sprint between the remaining eight racers left in the lead group. Again, Bike Werx’s Alex Fix took 3rd, with Cedeno in 7th and Giovanni Jimenez taking 8th.

Congrats to Alex Fix for his back-to-back podium finishes and to the rest of the Bike Werx Team for working together through a weekend of tough racing. Check back with the blog over the course of the season as Team Bike Werx races through the 2011 season.

(Thanks to Michael Cedeno for the race report.)
